Default would you enroll your son in a non-LDS troop

if your ward and nearby wards did not have functioning troops?

I guess this a question about how much you value scouting outside of the LDS context.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

I only get involved in scouts as a leader or as a father to comply with the church's program. If I was in an area that didn't have a functioning scouting organization I would take it as a major blessing and avoid it completely.

I've been told that in Utah, the ward/stake sponsored troops are the most successful.

My belief is that there are many more choices for kids in which to involve themselves in activities today when I was a kid. Growing up in my ward, there were about 2 dozen YM my age. of the 24, I think it was something like 18 earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

The numbers in my current ward are much, much smaller (a total of 11 YM) but interest in scouting doesn't rank high for many of them. They all say that they don't have time for it.
