and Blaizeman, an athlete finishing near the end with ALS, noted, we have made no progress since the days of Gehrig. Within five years of diagnosis, you're dead. Within one year, you're usually deteriorating.

Of all diseases where progress has been made, it is sad, none has been made here.

My uncle was diagnosed with ALS in the last year and a half. It's amazing how rapidly he has declined. He has been writing children's books and getting some satisfaction out of that, but for the most part he experiences increasing depression. It's a horrible disease and will probably take his life within a year or 2.

my boss's research led in part to possibly a new breakthrough. Paraoxonase gene implicated as possible cause of ALS (iotw, possibly one cause among any, in the sense that it seems to confer increased risk).
