And lack of academic freedom (if a professor questions the LDS Church's rather large claims he gets fired) and crazy beliefs such as gays going to hell. The LDS Church announcing support for an anti-gay-rights constitutional amendment didn't help.
According to this Utah State is 48th among public universities, so maybe it is Utah and Utah State that will be invited in. No matter that they are both commuter schools without support for athetlics.

Colorado is top 5 (usually 1 or 2) in physics research, and is the #1 school in the nation in NASA funding. Nobody cares about undergrad rankings. ASU is arguably the best school in the country in my field. There is some great research coming out of Utah in my field as well, although I'm not sure where they rank in other areas. BYU has jack for research, which is why the pac10 doesn't want them.

Actually, Creekster is right. Pac 10 powers are biased against Mormonism. They don't want a school that's an arm of the Mormon church in their conference. It's that simple.

All you self-fellating butt funguses realize that the Pac was formed over 80 years ago...way before any of these schools were "researching" anything?

The Pac is an athletic conference. Its own website doesn't even discuss academics, except as it pertains to who makes the All Academic teams.

SDSU is part of the Pac 10. For soccer.

So are UC Davis, Boise State, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, CS Bakersfield, and Portland State for other sports.

Please stop all this research institution crap unless you can provide a source that says that research at a graduate level is a criterion for admittance to play football and shoot hoops.

Would the Pac-10 avoid Sunday games in order to appease BYU?

That was the criterion given by a pac10 rep in response to an email that somebody on CB sent him. I think there have been a couple of those now. If it's really because they just don't like Mormons I imagine this would be a convenient excuse, or it could just be the truth. I don't know if the time the conference was formed is relevant, as I imagine that their priorities have changed since then.

I believe this is the biggest obstacle facing BYU in regards to an invite to a BCS conference.
