Of course, BYU could have gambled and sent 8 or 9 or 10 or even 11. ANd maybe WA's crappy blocking would have been equally overwhelmed by 8, or 9 or 10 guys. Are you actually saying that you know what would have happened without the penalty? This is all just pointless specualtion. The penalty was called, the kick was attempted, and the kick was blocked. The BYU won.

They may well have, given what was at stake. As creek points out you have no idea.

Given where the blocker came from, I think it's very possible Jan gets there regardless of how many are sent. The real question when making that determination is where the extra four guys attack the line. If the extra four attack from the edges, I don't think that would have much affect on Jan's penetration. If they attacked the middle, then that could certainly have contributed to it. I don't believe any of us knows where those extras attacked, so the debate is pretty much pointless.

BYU still won and UW still lost. Sorry it's been so hard on you.

SU, are you ready to admit that the refs made the right call?

creek's right--this is all speculation. But I think the argument that the block came from Jan, who rushes regardless of fake possibilities, doesn't hold water. It's a little like saying that offsides should only be called if the player that jumped actually made a play. And we do know where the extra guys came--they rushed the interior. Notice the two ends are lined up exactly where they normally line up--leaving them exquisitely vulnerable to a fake.
Look, all of this is moot. Locker heaved it 30 feet in the air--30 feet. If he had spiked it that hard, there's no discussion on whether to make the call. The ref threw the flag immediately--obvious broken rule, obvious call. The resulting completely justified penalty gave BYU a slight advantage in their ability to block the ball. UW still should have made the kick, BYU blocked it, thus capping four quarters of domination with another great play. BYU deserved to win. End of story. |
