I think you can take 2nd in the Pac 10 and get in. USC has been in the title game for a while now and 2nd place has often been enough to get a #2 team in the BCS too.

USC has only been in the title game twice, and hasn't played for the title since it lost to Texas in the 2005 season.

Technically, though they did win a championship (split) without playing in the BCS.

We were talking about making it into BCS bowl games, not winning titles, hence "the" title game.

Personally, I agree with Il Pad that it's a no brainer. There are ten spots, nine of which are split between six conferences, and one of which might, in the case of an undefeated non-BCS, be offered to a team from one of the other five conferences.

So in three of the BCS conferences, two teams are guaranteed a spot; in the other three BCS conferences the conference champion is guaranteed a spot; and for the other five conferences, all fifty teams are left competing against each other for a theoretically possible at-large bid.

You guys are all smoking crack if you'd rather be in our position than playing in a BCS conference. It would still take a special year to get into a BCS bowl, but the alternative is so much more attractive. Hell we could finish 5th in the Pac-10 and still play Utah in a bowl game.

Notice I said I'd still rather be in the PAC 10 or Big XII, both for the money and the better competition. But I think I chances of getting into a BCS bowl are better where we are.

I still disagree. Oklahoma has proved you don't even have to win your conference to play for an NC. We can still get into a BCS bowl with 1 even 2 losses. No chance of that ever happening in a mid-major.
