Since 1980, BYU is 6-31-1 against BCS teams that have won 8 or more games in a season. The biggest margin of victory in the six wins was 28-21 vs Miami in 1990.

Maybe Dick Harman will use that figure in his next article.

Come on, you gotta admit it was a little funny. Sorry for the hijack, but I couldn't resist.

I don't like the proposed $700B goverment bailout, but I recognize it as a pragmatic necessity.
Your schedule:

upside:
--slightly more likely to make a BCS game in years we are not legit top 12
--financially we might bring in an extra $2M (our share) every 10 years (??--this is incremental over a tough schedule model)

downside:
--boring regular season
--everyone complaining about our schedule
--more likely to get waxed in the big spotlight game once we make it

My schedule:

upside:
--exciting season
--national talk in your good years is about what you've done on the field not about your weak schedule
--financial increase in tickets, TV revenue

downside:
--slightly less likely to make the BCS

Slightly

When I say slightly I mean extremely slightly, and possibly zero. It's much more difficult to game the system than people realize. It could easily work against you. You could be a legit top 5 team, with a crap schedule, and play one unlucky bad game, and lose all BCS dreams. Also with a tough schedule, you could get lucky in that tough national game, win, and be overrated due to the tough schedule.

I don't know which of these assumptions the pussy schedule crowd is valuing differently than me. It's very mind boggling what the logic is.

So what are you hoping to get out of a BCS bowl. With that kind of pessimism/reality, you're basically saying you would expect BYU to get waxed in a BCS bowl, right? What are the chances we'd win a BCS bowl? Are you happy with say a 15% chance to keep it close or win and an 85% chance to get embarassed? What does that do for you?

It's infinitely better than playing a 6-7 UCLA team in Las Vegas that we have to beat by blocking a FG on the last play of the game.

Interesting.

If I had to choose from

a. crap Vegas Bowl victory or loss or whatever

vs

b. Hawaii type experience in a BCS game, where everyone's ripping on our schedule, and then we get embarassed

I choose a. Maybe that's the difference. I don't see any value in the Hawaii experience.

In a single isolated season it is better; however, over the course of ten years it's not better.

I agree with you that in general

BCS Bowl game > Las Vegas Bowl game

; however, I think that

Las Vegas Bowl game + 4 awesome non-conference games each year > Crappy non-conference + BCS bowl game once every 10 years.
