I don't believe in playing dirty, but I don't mind going hard after the rebound. FWIW, I've never tried to force a big guy underneath the hoop - I'd much rather do my best to keep them away from the rim by forcing them outside.

Lol!
I try to avoid it as well. No organized basketball in my stake; just Sat. morning games with the EQ at the ward house.

I remember playing on an intramural team my freshman year at the Y and we were pretty good. We had 10 guys but only 8 would play and we would light other teams up. I remember one game we had two girls officiating and they were horrible. We were cocky and older teams didn't like losing to punk freshmen as it is, but these girls didn't manage the game well and it started to get dirty. I remember collecting a defensive rebound and the guy who tried to box me out took a lazy swipe at the ball and as I moved the ball from his reach his hand continued up and popped me beneath the chin sending my teeth through my lip. No foul was called and as I wiped the blood from my mouth I chucked the ball a la Mike Waters into the wall. I thought it was funny that nobody responded to my outburst and turned around to see that everyone else was involved in a fight at center court. I don't mind playing with members if the games are decent. I used to play Friday nights at an open run session in Virginia where I was usually one of 2-3 caucasians in the entire gym. Those games were entertaining as the guy that ran the show would MC the games with his own play by play like Duke Tango of And 1 and Rucker Park fame. He liked me and usually let all the brothers on the floor know to guard me on the perimeter. They'd scoff. But they learned. When they learned I was Hawaiian they started calling me Kapono which I took offense to, but this year he's lights out so I've warmed to it.

We got massacred by Lakewood. They are probably the best team this year. With Garland 1 right next to them.
Right now our ward doesn't have many males in their 20s and 30s, and of the ones that are there, almost no one plays basketball. These young white dudes just come and go. Move out to the suburbs. |
