Closing down the Ute program would hurt BYU because we'd be without a natural rival. But then again, I see your point. Go for it.

I think that BYU's basketball success
has less of an impact on our basketball than football success has on our football team.
I could be wrong. |

Not sure I agree. DI caliber basketball talent in the state of Utah seems to me to be proportionately more rare than football. When BYU basketball is thriving BYU always has the edge with kids from practicing LDS families. Utah can only combat that with superior success. Local players haven't been the best basketball Utes, but they have been indispensable and formed a significant percentage of the best basketball Utes. Virtually all of these have been LDS.

I see what you are saying
but I attribute a portion of this to the fact that Majerus was an easy target for the BYU coaching staff in their pitch to an active LDS player. Juddy also had an impact on this as he was able to elaborate on the type of environment that the kids would face at the U.
Boylen seems to get the fact that respect for varying beliefs is important and will be tougher to recruit against. Truthfully, however, there are some who would go to BYU even if they just finished 1-25 and the U were 25-1 and had an LDS head coach with 3 GA's as assistats. Some people just want to go to BYU.

Strange he wasn't rated as highly in football as he was in basketball.

decent stats his senior year:
Cameron earned first-team all-league and second-team all-county after his senior season when he caught 76 receptions for 1,034 yards and scored 12 touchdowns.

here is the rivals article:
The great poet Robert Frost once mused about the road less taken. The award winning playwright Edward Albee explained in his outstanding play, "The Zoo Story", that one sometimes must take the long route before making it home correctly. That is the story of USC's latest commitment. The Trojans picked up the commitment today of tight end/slotback Jordan Cameron (6-4, 230, 4.6) who played high school football and basketball at Newbury Park, Calif. When Cameron gradated as part of the class of 2006, he only weighted about 180-pounds so he decided to accept a basketball scholarship from BYU. Something happened while Cameron was redshirt frosh at the Provo, Utah campus. He filled out and didn't lose a step. All of a sudden football definitely became an option and once he was given his release from BYU, schools such as USC, UCLA and Michigan came a calling for his services. Cameron visited with the UCLA coaching staff on Saturday and was at USC today. "I like Pete Carroll, he's a player's coach," Cameron said. "I wanted to play for a guy like that. "My sister also goes to USC and I'm going to live with her," Cameron said. "It is a good opportunity to spend time with sister and her baby. "USC wants me to gain 20-pounds and make the move to tight end," Cameron said. "I will sit out the year, bulk up and work on my speed and footwork. "I haven't played football for two years so I will have to shake the rust off," Cameron said. "I'm excited to be at USC, to be close to my family and make a career out of football." Cameron earned first-team all-league and second-team all-county after his senior season when he caught 76 receptions for 1,034 yards and scored 12 touchdowns.
