Bronco says they don't care about stars. BYU homers year after year say stars don't matter, I trust our coaches more than recruiting services.

Doesn't every team say this? When you buy into this, you're not only buying into that Bronco and staff are smarter than the recruiting services, but also that they're smarter than every other college staff.

If you take ten 5 star guys and compare them to ten 2 star guys, which group would you bet on having more future NFL guys?

Stars matter. The odds favor the coaches who can recruit more five star athletes.

However, BYU will never sign a boatload of five star athletes. And I believe by most of BYU recruits being in low profile areas, their rankings will be lower than if they were in high profile areas.

BYU would certainly improve if it could recruiting better athletes, not that its athletes are bad, just that the BCS upper level athletes are better.

I can think of Ben Olsen and Ofa Mohetau, neither of whom panned out. Were there others?

I'd rather get 3 and 4 star guys that will make an impact than 5 star guys that we lose for whatever reason.

How does a 1st team All-American placekicker only get two stars? Especially when that same ranking service lists a different kicker as 4 stars?

Maybe stars matter, but there are serious flaws and biases to the methodology and the coverage is often very, very spotty. Unless recruits market themselves both in summer camps and in playing the recruiting game (i.e. not committing early so that big schools can offer them, thus raising their profile), they will almost automatically be underrated, particularly if they don't live in a "major market".

Interesting, albeit brief article about how stars really do matter. The author breaks down the past 4 years of recruiting for the Big 10 conference.

In short, Paris Hilton was wrong. Stars are not blind.

Do you feel our recruiting classes are drastically underrated due to the stars systems, honestly?

Of course it's not perfect, but a reasonably logical fellow like yourself that understands data and stats, I have a hard time believing you buy into it.

We go after guys in major markets all the time. Seattle, Phoenix, Portland, NoCal, SoCal, Texas, Denver. Utah is getting more and more attention from these services.

When we do go after a four star recruit we butt heads with USC and Florida. When we go after a low end 4 star or high end three star, we go up against the Oregons and Colorados. To buy into this concept that we actually do have better recruiting classes than these guys, you would have to believe that every other coaching staff is stupid and lazy and we're the only smart ones.

Of course stars matter, but they are certainly not the be all end all.
