I don't know if there was a stated reason, but I think it came down to 2 reasons:

He decided that he would rather play football.
He was too big of a pussy to stick it out in the mission field.

So if someone goes on a mission and decides it isn't for them and is released honorably early from their mission, that makes them a pussy?

I think that is a weak excuse, personally.

Quitting early to play football is lame.

Just don't go at all, like Steve Young, who also was conflicted by his closeted homosexuality (which can be seen in highlight clips of him running downfield with the ball).

Don't go for 1/3 of your mission then just leave. You made a commitment, stick to it.

I will say that he is wrong to have quit. What other choice is there but to say that it is wrong? Was it right to quit?
