Just the home games. I do not recall a prayer at Stanford a few years ago (and, come to think about it, maybe that exaplins what happened there).

I would have to agree with this. I had season tickets for the four years I lived in Utah and I was constantly amazed at the dorky stuff people would say.

One of my favorites was a couple in their mid 40's who sat in front of me and my brothers during the 06 season. The husband and wife were over the top with the PDA during the games and everytime we got a good defensive stop the wife would say "oohh he ran into a cougar den" the husband would smile approvingly and they would giggle. It never got old for them or us for that matter.

is it right before kickoff? before both teams are on the field?

is everyone quiet? an errant trumpet noise would be a nice touch...

Maybe if Utah began their games with a prayer they would finish higher than 3rd in the conference.

It's before the National Anthem, probably about 15 minutes before the game. That's when a majority of the fans are about to leave their home.

so what is a typical prayer? Is it a pupil looking person? Or older folks. Maybe a perk for giving generously to the booster club?

You should first invite those with unkind feelings toward anyone in the stadium to leave. It would be cool to see your board adversaries have to get up and walk out while we waited impatiently.

And BYU should just call on people randomly to offer the prayer, like those prizes given to people at halftime. "And tonight's R.C. Willey Invocation will be offered by the lucky fan seated in,,,,,,,,SECTION 142, ROW 12 SEAT 4 !!!!" A deacon could pass a portable mike to the winner.

Somewhat more seriously, although the prayers often seem a bit perfunctory, I remember the prayer given before the Georgia Tech game. It was really very good and, as much as one could expect before an event in which a bunch of pituitary cases start ripping heads off, brought a nice spirit to the occasion. A Tech fan I walked out with commented on it and was very impressed. All you Utes who deride the concept of BYU Football being a missionary tool, take THAT!

The typical prayer is about the same as you'd hear in a ward basketball game. Pray for the athletes of both teams and a safe return home. It seems like the giver of the prayer is usually an older male.
