Default Outdoor cooking setups?

I left my POC gas grill when we moved and have been trying to figure out the ideal setup for outdoor cooking. I like the convenience of a gas grill, and I'm not still not convinced that the difference in taste (if real) is worth fussing with a charcoal grill. However, I've never grilled on a good charcoal grill--does a good one eliminate any of the fussing around? There's also a sort of primal appeal to charcoal. I like the idea of a smoker but have zero experience with it. I need a good setup for under $600.

What's your outdoor cooking setup? Any ideas?
