But to your point, no. It was a functioning state that controlled it's territory. You might not have liked how they did it, but if that's our criteria for broke and fixed there's a whole lotta broke places out there.

And as '71 said, how is that relevant to the debate? My point is WE took a functioning nation-state and broke it. It's our job to undue the harm and make it work again. Hopefully as a functioning liberal democracy in the classic sense of the term.

Actually I think it was a secret communique to its lieutenants in Iraq that we intercepted. I don't have it in front of me, but I remember the language seemed to indicate that losing Iraq to America would be a critical blow.

And just for the record I was and still am not a supporter of our Iraq invasion. I thought it was a distraction from where the real action was and is. That being said I really do believe that it would speak very poorly of us as a nation and people if we left Iraq before it was once again a functioning nation-state. We made the problem, we are morally obligated to fix it.

Last I checked the organization murdering Iraqis and Americans in Iraq called itself Al Qaeda.

actually killing the commanders involved with the communique seems like the more critical blow.

But who knows. This is GOP fantasy land logic we are dealing with.

Only the ones that have huge strategic impact on us would be my opinion.

so you are for pre-emptive wars in which their is no direct threat to America?

[God help us that not even Iraq can change people's minds about this]
