Unless it was the pen used to sign the Declaration of Independace, or made of solid gold, I can't imagine a pen being worth that much. It does seem pretty steep. But why would you pay that much for a pen in the first place? Just doesn't make sense to me.

Mont Blancs are the Bentley's, Maybach's or Rolls of the writing world. There isn't a finer writing instrument in the world.

That pen pales in comparison to other Mont Blanc pens. They have a series with the Mont Blanc star diamond floating in the pen cap and also others encrusted with over 1,000 diamonds.
It's a status symbol in the corporate, political world. My bishop told us a story where he was at a meeting in Russia where a US and Russian delegate signed some accord. The Russian signed his with a bic pen, and the US delegate whipped out his Mont Blanc and signed his copy. They then exchanged papers and countersigned. Then the Russian delegate said now we exchange pens. The US delegate was visibly upset he reported. http://www.montblanc.com/special_100years.php
