I am having a jay santos moment, in that I am having trouble understanding how disfellowship would be useful in a majority of such cases (and I think many if not a majority of Bishops would disfellowship such a member, i.e. have a probationary period). |

It might be worthwhile to point out that church discipline is not the same as forgiveness. Being under discipline doesn't make you "unforgiven" and then the moment you are re-fellowshipped, you become "forgiven."

Due to my personal experiences over the past few years I'd love to give my take on this, but not sure it would be appropriate in a public forum like this.
For the most part I agree with you and Jay.

i don't see it as useful and would hope compassion and working with him would be the course followed, but I'm glad I don't and won't have to deal with it.

The consequences for guy in this hypothetical involve: --loss of wife and family --pain he's caused his kids that will likely lead to long-term psychological issues --possible addiction to alcohol and drugs --messing up his view of sex and ability to have healthy sex life with a spouse --possible STD's --loss of his career --possible legal consequences --financial ruin, furthering the hardships to his wife and kids which he will be aware of for lifetime --damage to self esteem and worth --damage to relationship with God --lack of confidence in himself to be able to make his life right --loss of friends and a very lonely existence --ton of grief and pain I couldn't and wouldn't remove these consequences of sin from this man. This guy's gonna have a helluva time repenting and bringing himself to God. The church should do everything possible to help this man repent. I don't think the church should do anything to add to this pain or the pain of his family (which excommunication and church courts frequently do). |
