I was pretty impressed with how quickly security responded......several buildings downtown were evacuated, so there were a lot of people in the streets......police and building security everywhere......very orderly.

That one was pretty scary. I dropped under my desk very quickly but we have glass walls in our offices, so I was nervous that the shards would cut me to pieces.

Our neighbors came by our house to see if my wife and kids were ok. I thought that was very kind of them.

One thing I learned....in an emergency, cell phones are useless. Circuits were jammed and are still somewhat screwy. I called my house and was routed to some other home. Also, i have received text messages from other people that are intending to send them elsewhere.

Ham radio is the way to go in a true emergency lasting any significant amount of time.

Yes, it's on the to-do list.

I did think of this. I was recently called and aksed to become HAM certified.

Time to look into classes and equipment.

Seems like you need relatives to also have HAM equipment so that you can communicate with them.

I told a coworker once that I was thinking about doing that, and they looked at me like I'd lost my mind.

I don't mean to sound like a nosebleed, but on Sunday, you SoCal folk may be asked whether you contacted your home and visiting teaching families this afternoon.

You and I will have the last laugh when everyone else is lying dead in the streets after a natural disaster, but we can chat the night away on our HAM radios.

DDD: "Hey, BDB, what are you doing?"

BDB: "Nothing, everyone here is dead."

DDD: "Yeah, same here. I'm bored."

BDB: "Me, too."

My friend was in the middle of the bar exam during the earthquake, and said it "shook" her concentration quite a bit.
