Default Why does everyone have Curtis' predicted yards so low?

I put him at 95, which I was being really optimistic about.

My reasons for thinking he won't break 100 yard rushing even though Arizona had a weak rushing defense last year:

1. Curtis' performance against ND last year showed he doesn't do as well agains big, fast defenses. He had 12 carries for 23 yards.
2. Anae's system of using short passes out of the backfield as rushes. Curtis will get most of his yards on receptions.
3. I think we're going to use a good rotation of backs.

The UA game will go alot like ND for Curtis. He will be somewhat ineffective rushing and get most of his yards on receptions. We will go to our bigger backs, Fui and Manase, to run the ball.

I hope that Curtis breaks the career rushing record this year, but am worried he won't get the carries to do it.

Because BYU's OL can't deal with faster defenses like ND, BC, and Cal. CB's average yards per carry against those teams were abysmal, but I think it was more a function of the OL being beat than CB not being fast enough.

AZ's defense is not stellar against the run, but I don't think we can run all over them either. I had Curtis in the 80s because I think we will run him quite a bit, but not for a lot of yard's per carry. I expect we'll mix up the carries and Curtis will catch some passes.

Do you think we'll have a healthy mix of backs or will Anae give Curtis a majority of the carries?

I would expect CB to get the majority of the carries, but I would also expect Tonga and Fui to get a few touches as well.

For a few reasons. I think AZ with their overall team speed on defense will make it difficult to Curtis to get many yards.

2nd I think that with all of the options at running back, that while Curtis will get the bulk of the carries, I still expect Vakapuna, Tonga and even Unga once in a while to get some shots.

3rd..I know most think BYU's offensive line will crush AZ's front 7,,,and they very well may, but I think BYU will struggle run the ball in this game and will force Beck to throw more than normal, especially to the Tight Ends.

I think we have to run effectively to win this game. I expect the single back sets to not be very effective. We'll see quite a few short passes to Curtis out of the backfield, but Arizona will quickly shut that down.

To win we have to be effective running in our two back set. We must make AZ suck people into the box to defend the run. I don't think dink and dunk will work well with their team speed. We must use our power.

BTW---I love the Tonga-Vakapuna two back sets they've ran in scrimmages. Either guy can play the fullback. It creates uncertainty and gives us a good power punch.
