Default BYU lost because they didn't have an answer for Landale

(I first posted this on CB)

Rose had an interesting strategy. Try not to double Landale. Use Worthington and Dastrup to guard him. Don't use Yoeli to guard him until the final 9 minutes or so. In order to prevent Childs from getting into foul trouble, and to save Childs' legs.

On the other hand, Randy Bennett put Landale on BYU's best player in this game, Childs. Best on best.

The idea was that Landale would get some points. But they would be 2 pointers. And maybe he shoots 60%. They'll live with that. The problem was that Landale was essentially incapable of missing as he bullied his way to the rim. In the first half when help came, and Landale kicked it out, St. Mary's couldn't capitalize. It was not likely that they would continue to do so poorly in the 2nd half. And that turned out to be true. Some of their shots started falling. And Worthington and Dastrup couldn't do anything on defense against Landale. I know that Dastrup had a couple of possessions in the 1st half where he made some good defensive plays. But you look at his overall body of work on Landale, and he was getting torched. That's why Rose couldn't go to him at the end of the game. And Bennett wasn't going to have Landale guarding Dastrup at the 3. He would have Landale guarding Yoeli. And a small on Dastrup at the 3 point line.

How would the game played out if Yoeli had guarded Landale for a larger part of the game? I think Rose is right. Childs would have gotten into foul trouble and would have only been marginally more effective. The fact is Yoeli doesn't have an answer for Landale either.

The 3rd most efficient player in the country torched BYU. That's why BYU lost.

The truth is, BYU only has two good players and the rest are roll players on semi-good teams.

BYU simply doesn't recruit well enough. You also made a good comment on CB where you stated Rose recruits offensive players, not players with defensive athletic skills. That's why BYU's defensive efficiency sucks. If you have slow-footed players with bad positioning, you'll never be an elite defender and certainly no elite defensive team.

Even though Rose focuses upon offensive skills he never recruits and signs offensive players who can take on another player. So he wants offense but no athletic skills and his players are incapable of playing elite defense.

The strategy was to single guard Landale and hold down the rest of their team, basically because 3 points > 2 points. It almost worked. I really think if we had doubled Landale that the rest of their team would have gone crazy from three and we lose by 15 points in regulation. That's what St. Mary's is built for. Sure, it would be great to have a lockdown defender at the 5, but hardly anyone in college basketball has that. Certainly no one in our league, including Gonzaga does either. Unfortunately we came just barely short of closing it out at the end and ran out of gas in the OT. I think as a team we're playing better now than we were then, but it will still be a longshot winning at their place. But I don't think it's impossible. It's less "impossible" than winning at Gonzaga was last year.

Still don't have anyone that can guard him one on one. And he's in better shape than anyone on BYU's team. Not only is he one of the most efficient players in the country, he also just wears the other team out because he doesn't have to sub.

Who is BYU's player that St. Mary's doesn't have an answer for?

If positions 1 to 4 are a push. And Position 5 is a massive win for St. Mary's....

then advantage to St. Mary's.

I predict a SMC win, but

if EB, TJ, jashire and Childs are all on, and we can throw more bodeis at Landale, Luke, Dastrup and Nixon, making the entry pass difficult BYU could win. Nah, not going to happen but if a miracle happens I'll take it.

They should have beaten us a lot worse before it got to OT. But they didn't. We did a good job of perimeter defense in that game.

it will be interesting to see if BYU switched strategies during the game. If the first strategy doesn't work.

No it wasn't. It sucked as usual.
