Speaking of RUTS
All this talk reminds me of a funny story. A couple of weeks ago I am coaching my AAU team and we start the game with a zone press. After about five minutes the score is 16-0 and the other team has not crossed half-court yet. I called time out and told the girls to stop the press and let the other team bring the ball up the court. They all moaned and complained but they laid off as instructed. A few minutes later the other team finally scored and there was another time out. The score was 20-2. In the huddle one of my girls said, "Hey coach, now that they have a basket, can we press again?"

My high school basketball coach told us all about an incident where another high school coach from a not-so-good team approached him before the game and said "could you take it easy on us?" (i.e. please don't RUTS).
My coach was offended. I think our high school smashed them. What the hell is Air Force supposed to do when the game is out of hand? Pass? |

In youth soccer I've witnessed two philosophies. The dominant philosophy is to show no mercy, to annihilate the opposition, to make sure they are humiliated and that they hate soccer.
The minority position is one of a coach I admire. I will make certain nonstarters play a lot, or play starters out of position to give more experience, to improve his team for the future. Annihilation doesn't improve either team.
