I don't know if it's just my boys, but they seem to want to do....nothing. They rarely have ideas, and want to be entertained by the adults. That is, the adults hand-feed them entertainment. Even then, they don't show much interest.

When I was a scout, I never recall asking the leader what we were going to do. We were always hoping that they would get out of the way and let us get to football, capture the flag, exploring, etc. that we wanted to do.

I'm not sure why we were so different from my boys. Big city? Modern times?

When I was in scouts, the troop went rabbit hunting every other week and played basketball the rest of the time.

I never went rabbit hunting, so I was a bad scout as far as our ward was concerned. I come from a long line of non-hunters.

There is a small interest rate. Beyond that, I suppose it's the same as any other person who owes money to somebody else.

So people could lose their possessions if they default on their loans?

I suppose. I don't know how else you deal with outstanding debts.

Hmmm. I may stop donating to the PEF. Some Guatemalan kid is going to lose his shack because of me.

It's not just your boys. Not to sound cliche, but it does seem more prevalent in the x-box generation.

But then you're robbing someone from a Guatemalan bill collection agency the chance to have a job too. Catch-22.

Efran Ramirez was late on his loans and found the decapitated head of a curelom in his bed.

Seriously though, what does the church do to the poor who receive assistance from stake funds but do not repay them? Probably little more than a lecture on honesty.

What are the loan terms and payment requirements?

Progress reports are required twice each year to verify effort and attendance at school, worthiness, activity in church and institute, and repayment integrity. Other requirements include the following:

* Soon after they start school, participants begin to make small monthly payments (about $5) to the bank.
* Larger payments are begun soon after graduation for a period of 2–8 years.
* A small amount of interest (3% plus an inflation factor) is charged to the loan.
* Participants strive to repay the loan as soon as possible to bless others who need help.
* In the event of a significant personal challenge, loan payments may be deferred or adjusted.
