It's a fair question. Again, it's a fine line.

Under those circumstances, what's the difference between a faith promoting historian and an apologist? To me, the Packer line is "we don't need historians, we need apologists."

The need to lie and the existence of a well paying market for flowery lies, and honors heaped upon the liars just speaks volumes about a culture. It says it all.

In the interest of full disclosure, I would guess that Packer's sentiments are in the minority among FP/Q12. They bug me, but I've moved on. It's their church. They're in charge. They do what they want. If I get in trouble with the church for something I write someday (unlikely, but possible), I'll deal with it then.

If Packer wants to continue to go after the three big dangers to the church - homosexuals, feminists, intellectuals - it'll make for interesting discussion.

Incidentally, Packer says something pretty intriguing in this talk, where he mentions a "growing group of the discontented. That is the rank and file who are trying to do what they are supposed to do and feel neglected as we concentrate on solving the problems of the exceptions."

I wonder if this is still an issue 15 years on.

Yeah, Democrats are an interesting bunch.

Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

I don't think that was his message. I think his cautions were intended to instruct people not to ignore/factor out the Spirit.

I want to read to you a most significant statement by President Joseph F. Smith, a statement that you would do well to keep in mind in your teaching and research, and onw which will serve somewhat as a text for my remarks to you:

"It has not been by the wisdom of man that this people have been directed in their course until the present; it has been by the wisdom of Him who is above man and whose knowledge is greater than that of man, and whose power is above the power of man . . . The hand of the Lord may not be visible to all. There may be many who can not discern the workings of God's will in the progress and development of this great latter-day work, but there are those who see in every hour and in every moment of the existence of the Church, from its beginning until now, the overruling, almighty hand of him who sent His Only Begotten Son to the world to become a sacrifice for the sins of the world.

If we do not keep this constantly in mind--that the Lord directs this Church--we may lose our way in the world of intellectual and scholarly research.

You're really "on" today, SU. I mean it. Very well done.

Just like the Cougars shooting three-pointers this afternoon.

You can't be so cavalier if they still have agents out there trying to infect our children's cerbral cortex's, especially your daughters'. You have to fight them. Fight them.
