I still didn't give him any money.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

Good for you. My mission president once told us that if we paid fast offerings, we'd never have to feel guilty about not giving panhandlers money. That wasn't my reason to not give them anything.

I never give them anything because I'm a selfish bastard.

Here are my two thoughts about the images of Christ we use most frequently (the painting above, the Christus, etc.)

1. Jesus' mother was a Jew who lived 2000 years ago and so Jesus should be realtively short (by today's standards), have olive colored skin, and coarse, dark hair. The images we have look VERY European to me.

2. The genetic material that comes to Jesus through his father is not that of an ethnic Jew, meaning that he ought to have looked fairly different than other Jews.
