So true. To quote Steve Klauke (for those not in the SLC area, he's the radio guy for The Bees) "Baseball is a sport that, when it looks like not a lot is going on, a lot is really going on."

You're a baseball guy. I knew there was a reason I liked you.

I love baseball - always have done. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to watch as much lately as I would prefer. I hope to go to some SLC Bees games this month, but my selection is pretty limited here in Utah.

I try to make it to Denver to watch the Atlanta Braves series there every year, but the last two times the timing hasn't worked out for me.

Soccer seems to me to be the ultimate in 'defensive' sports, IMO, and takes a well-educated fan to really enjoy watching it.
The second baseman shifting to the middle with a guy on first to prepare for a double play is really that compelling?

Coupled with the manager ordering a hit & run to take advantage of the hole, taking into account the hitter's propensity for hitting to the Right Side, and the resulting shifts to cover the bases, take the relay throw from Right Field, the backing up of the relay man, whether the Right Fielder should attempt a throw to third (or the plate) or try to hold the hitter at first, whether the Right Fielder lined himself up correctly for the play, whether the cutoff man takes the cutoff to try to pick off the guy rounding first, whether the pitcher pouts or makes sure to position himself correctly...

I could go on, but I fear it's wasted effort.

You can describe a football play in the same way, the baseball is a thinking man's game argument is tired. I like baseball, but follow mostly through box scores and standings until later in the season.

You can certainly describe Football in a similar fashion, and I point out that I did not claim in any way that baseball is a thinking man's game. IMO, Baseball involves MORE such involvement than football, but certainly not by a large margin.

In fact, I almost likened it to Football, involving the blocking of the line, FB, and receivers as being directly relevant to the results of a play, while not being directly involved.

Jay posed a question, which I answered rather well, IMO. Don't try to make it anything more than what it was.

You did answer it very well. And even though it was Hsaru that brought it up, it's fun to call baseball the thinking man's game because of the reaction you get from the haters.

I've said it once and I'll say it again - if one hates baseball, it is because one doesn't understand it.

lol - I enjoy inciting raucous discussion & irritation in many forums, but this is not one of my favorites.

This is a futbol thread, dammit. You baseballers go start your own discussion elsewhere.

Another statement by my son's coach: "I'd rather lose by playing good football than win by playing kickball."

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

I like good football, but sometimes a contrast in styles is also fun.

I watched a high level American U-17 game involving one team with superior athletes and good overall game skills and one where the strategy was perfect for that team.

The better team had more players, played a European style of careful advancement of the ball.

The other team had some fast player, long balled it and challenged every pass. It made for a fascinating contrast with every header, every pass ending up in a hard tackle and only a missed counter-attack by a superior team determined the game. The "banger" team played its game to perfection and would not have succeeded had it tried to play the European style for which it was ill-equipped.
