I don't think it is French. I think it is that they make a lot of Maple Syrup (in fact, theyt make excellent high quality pure Maple Syrup) and they use it in everything and that is only a very slight exaggeration.

I remember one time in the cottage country north of Toronto visiting a family that had a large grove of Maple trees on their property.

It must have been November or December when we visited their property. They had their labyrinth of (as I recall) rain gutters interconnecting about 2 dozen maples all tapped into the tree for the sap. It all came together in a huge kettle in the middle of the grove which they used to make the syrup, of which they sent these two hungry missionaries home each with a bottle.

Mmmm, Mmmm.

And yes, they put maple syrup on everything.
