In the few games I've seen, I would say that it's a combination of a few things:

1) BYU likes to push the ball up the floor to set a fast-paced game. If they get easy baskets from this, they do ok. But if the other team is fast and can get back, it seems to take BYU out of it's rhythm early by forcing the Cougars to go into a half court set.

2) Tavernari jacks up threes with impunity. It doesn't matter how bad he shoots either. He's just hell-bent on shooting as many as he can in as little time as possible.

3) BYU seems to have a tough time getting offensive rebounds early. Too many one-and-dones. A lot of that has to do with the team shooting a bunch of mid-range to long jump shots on fast breaks rather than taking the ball to the rim.

This is what I've noticed anyway.
