End of the Holy War?
This rumor has floated around since 2010, but it's starting to look more and more concrete, that the 2012 game will be the last for at least a few years, thanks largely in part to the new PAC-12/Big Ten regular season deal.
Presently, each PAC-12 team plays 9 conference games. With a Big Ten opponent each year, that instantly fills 10 of each team's 12 slots: 5 home and 5 away. And like the 67 other BCS teams, Utah now wants to host 7 home games. In other words, if BYU or Utah State want to stay on the schedule, they'll have to travel to RES every time they play, and we all know that BYU won't consent to such a thing. Greed on Utah's part? Perhaps, but then again Utah was one of only four(?) BCS teams to play 6 road games last year. Michigan had 8 home games and didn't even travel until week six. That's just the way things are these days. Once BYU lands in the Big XII or wherever, just wait, they'll want 7 or 8 home games just like everyone else. Stay tuned... |

Good. Don't want to play Utah.
Utah has no choice. They need an extra game because of the lack of basketball income. Next season, Utah is planning to actually pay people to attend their hoops games. |

the conference ties and geography created the reason for the rivalry. With no conference ties and no geographic interest in Utah any more, I don't even care if they do or don't play. I suppose for recruiting purposes it might matter, but not to me as an out of state fan.
I didn't follow Utah this year and I usually do when they were in conference.

Just shows you the greed--no amount of money is ever enough. They get something like 20+ million and to score a bit more they will sacrifice the series (again, I don't care, I'm not complaining).
They have to keep up with the Joneses, all the other schools they are competing with. Money to hire a new basketball coach for example. USC will be coming out of sanctions, UCLA might turn things around, Wash State has Leach, and so forth. |

So was my decision to fold the Ute subforum into the football forum justified? I think so.
