Default Will a McCain candidacy cause a split in GOP?

...and fracture the Republican party in two? Will a new party be formed from this years run for the white house?

No. Because, ultimately the GOP is not about any specific principle. It's about power and $.

McCain represents the best chance of GOP keeping the White House, and therefore keeping power and $.

Look at all the establishment GOP people endorsing McCain. Where are all the endorsements of Romney? Hard to find one.

McCain represents nothing new.

The GOP is going to lose in November. They've worn out their welcome.

Yes, and that is what I meant...there are those that are guided by conservative ideologies...and the Dems and Rep are seeminlgy blending together to where there are no real differences.

I believe there are many out there that are strict constitutionalists, and those who are morally guided etc...that would be more likely to band together under that banner than the current GOP banner.

The morally guided? Like the Taliban?

The "strict constitutionalist" tent is a much smaller tent than the current GOP tent.

I feel the same as the fill in on Glenn Beck last night: he referred to the scene in Officer and Gentleman, where Lou Gosset Jr. is shouting to "Mayo" to "LEAVE" and Mayo shouts back...."I got nowhere else to go"

I'm NOT a McCain fan, but, if everyone drops out..."I got nowhere else to go".

Hillary and Obama make me want to be Canadian.

Primaries in their current format may weed out candidates to quickly.

Yes, thanks for taking me to the extreme religious right. Sheesh...I forgot where I'm at.

You know, I hope that there are many in this country that have "morals", that are "morally guided" and yet, are rational, intelligent, normal people. And, I hope that there are many more of these types of people than you are so curtly dismissing.

Pessimism is Mike's calling card.

To answer your primary question, no, it will not split the party. And I say that as a pretty strong anti-McCain guy. What it will do is surpress Republican voter turnout, which combined with potentially high Obama-fever turnout, could lead to a rout.

McCain's best hope is to have Hillary as a candidate, for whom the distaste is so strong that it will still cause Republicans to vote.

I'd love to see a GOP split. I think the GOP at its best is important for America. I like many of their ideas on the economy, for instance. If they could split away from the CB brainwashed warmongering types, I wouldn't even mind a republican president now and again. In its current form, however, the GOP is a nightmare and should be killed with fire.

But Dems are worse. Reps suck, but Dems are worse.

As Borg points out, we got nowhere else to go.
