Default BYU to pay one of the highest FCA stipends in country

and almost $1000 per year more than Utah. This will help recruiting to some extent, at least in general across all sports. The biggest impact might be in the non-rev sports though.

that's interesting. And a good strategy. If you can't get into a P5, compete in the ways you can.

Good PR strategy. Announce the day after nobody is drafted.

Maybe the higher stipend will help us get a top 20 basketball transfer this year:

19. Tomasz Gielo, Liberty (eligible immediately) -- The native of Poland played only seven games last season before suffering a stress fracture in his right foot. Gielo is 6-9 and knocked down better than 40 percent of his 3-pointers the past two seasons.

Considering: Ole Miss, Kansas State, Boise State, Nevada, Marquette, BYU, Vanderbilt, Nebraska

This guy averaged 12ppg with 6 rebounds the last two seasons. Could be a nice boost in our frontcourt depth this year. Obvious upgrade over Neilson anyway. Hopefully we get him.

I heard the baseball coach Mike Littlewood on BYU Sports Nation yesterday explain how this will especially help the non rev sports. It's because those sports get fewer scholarships. I think he said NCAA baseball gets 11.5 per team, or something like that, and he has to divide up that money among 27 players. So each baseball player at BYU was getting only enough money to pay about 25% of their tuition. There are no "free rides" for mens athletes in sports other than football and basketball. He said this means the extra money thrown into those 11.5 scholarships now means all 27 players will have enough to cover tuition.

Where this really helps BYU is due to tuition costs being lower at BYU than at many other schools. So for example, while a player at a more expensive school say like Stanford, will also get a little more money, for him it might mean having a little more of his tuition paid for, but because it's so expensive to begin with it means he still needs to come up with a lot on his own. For players BYU is recruiting it could end up making a pretty big difference because it means still getting a quality education without having to worry about coming up with as much money to pay for it.
