Is it good for Mormondom that they dont' return? Maybe yes. Broaden and strengthen the diaspora.

Maybe there really is a method behind the madness. Keep BYU mediocre to deepen and broaden the diaspora, LOL.
Enter to Learn. Go Forth to Serve. There's the reason for your diaspora.

This is funny. And you accuse SU of being hard-headed.

I don't where you keep getting this stuff. What makes you think none of the BYU grads in top-tier research schools don't come back to BYU? That's just nonsense.

Here are the degrees of the current faculty at the Mechanical Engineering Dept. at BYU:

Ohio State
Virginia Tech
MIT
Air Force Inst. of Tech.
Berkeley
Univ. of Utah
Purdue
Univ. of Utah
Purdue
Purdue
Michigan
Illinois
Wisconsin
RPI
Univ. of Utah
Stanford
Ohio State
Illinois
Arizona State
MIT
Utah State
MIT
Purdue
Stanford
Wisconsin
Purdue

The majority of new hires at BYU are from top-tier research schools.

What no Cal Tech?

Who's RPI? What does this have to do with football?

No, if that is all they aspire to do, they are doing poorly. It shouldn't be an aspiration but a fact of life.

And they should strive to be the best students within their fields of study.
I'd hate to be your kid. "Hey dad I just got a full ride scholarship to BYU and am living a good enough life to get my temple recommend and go on a mission!"

I'm not trying to say that BYU faculty didn't train at good research schools. I am saying that I don't think the VERY BEST academics come back to BYU. I don't know the metric for this however.

I will say that if BYU has a monopoly on the best Mormon minds, the future isn't bright.

I am very proud of my children, even though they live far from perfect lives. Nonetheless, certain matters come easy for them. All of them are temple worthy and so far, haven't even come close to straying. (We have one young boy who likes the ladies, so we're watching him).

Three of the four are excellent students, and the fourth is just a tad lazy.

So, although I am nothing to brag about, I'm happy as the next guy to brag about my kids, even though one can always find some kid bigger, brighter or faster. As for my complaints, other than contention, I have no complaints and plenty of pride.

So could every other institution. I don't have a problem with trying to get better. I do have a problem with people arguing that BYU is not doing well.
