Flood relief service
Our ward and stake went down to the flood affected counties here in WA (South of Olympia) on Saturday for service work. The previous weekend there were 3,000+ members working in these counties. I imagine there was 1,200 or so this weekend. The area authorities asked for help from the stakes further north after the local stakes worked last weekend. The church has received a lot of community goodwill for their efforts. The yellow 'Mormon helping hands' shirts were recognized in the communities as resources available to serve. Assignments were given from the local stake center and groups were then dispersed to specific geographies where they were given work orders - which came from the local municipality.
We did some good work and logged lots of hours on the able arms of the YM in the ward. Most of the labor was clearing waterlogged flooring, drywall, insulation, etc. We worked in groups of about ten per house. There were great examples from stake presidents on their backs in muddy crawl spaces pulling insulation right along with everyone else. It was a rewarding Saturday. (I'm telling everyone publicly about my good works, to make sure I don't receive any blessing in private.) Last edited by 8ballrollin; 12-18-2007 at 02:33 AM. |

Good for you.
I'll claim that I was there in spirit so I don't have to do any kind of service project.
