Devastating news from Iraq.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/26/wo...rtner=homepage
It appears that some rogue marines were involved in the very public murder of some Iraqi civilians. I can think of few things that would do more damage to our efforts in Iraq than this. As much respect as I have for our military, and as skilled as they may be, it is becoming increasingly clear that the military is the wrong tool for the task at hand. |

Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!! Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith. |

Bush is an idiot because....
....he thinks this war can be won in the deserts of the middle east ...he thinks that winning hearts and minds is unimportant ...he thinks that quasi-torture is a strategic win, rather than a short-sighted tactical win Afghanistant is an interesting situation. Before that war, we had rule by the Taliban, and OBL giving orders to his clan, and warlords ruling over society in general. Now, outside of the capital city, we have warlords ruling the country, the taliban coming back to power and controlling portions of the country, and OBL giving direction and orders to his clan. Progress has been incremental and uncertain. As was said last night by one of the commentators (retired General I believe), we will not know if we have "won" the war in Iraq when we leave. In fact, talk of "winning" the fight against the insurgency has completely been abandoned. At this point, I don't know that we even have a definition of a win. Lack of civil war and many years until development of a WOMD is a win perhaps. We have completely underestimated the difficulty of nation building. Of rolling back millenia of hate, bloodshed, and tradition. How did we become so arrogant? Perhaps is to our credit that we are so foolhardy, so naive, so willing to take on this Quixotic task of reshaping the world with our swords. |
