Last year I spent $5,000 on my wife's Christmas (countertops), so this year it is a couple of books for her.

A countertop is not a personal gift, but improvement on a home that both of you own, live in and use. I can't believe she let you cop out and call it her Christmas gift.

That is your female mind at work.

For us males, counter tops are counter tops. We can live with a kitchen that has sawhorses and planks of plywood for counter tops. Can you?

It sounds unsanitary.

Unsanitary? Perhaps. But it would work.

What IPU said. We had perfectly servicable countertops at the time. I had no desire for new ones, but she really did. It's similar to when we got a nice big HD TV. She watches at least as much TV as I do, but she was happy watching the old 20 inch model, so I consider the TV a gift for me. A lot of the gifts we get each other (cameras, DVDs, Books) are used by both of us, but that doesn't mean they aren't gifts.

Now, to your point, the countertops are more of an investment than the TV, and they do increase the value of our house, so it's not quite the same as getting her a $5,000 piece of jewelry, but she still thought it was a pretty nice gift.

Very good choice -you will be pleased.

Nice camera, Marsupial.

My mom is very practical. She always gets me a bottle or two of contact solution. Also clothes, since I hate shopping.

As soon as my wife hit highschool her mom would get her food storage items, pots, pans and dishes. Dropping serious hints for her to move out as soon as possible.

I bought my wife some Nike running shoes, Some lame eye lash curler she wanted ($28 from Nordstroms good hell that is expensive), some lotion, some clothes (specific ones she asked for no way would I pick them out myself). Some other crap that i cant remember right now.

For me I see a big box under the tree that looks a lot like Rockband, so my fingers are crossed.

My wife gave me my Christmas present tonight. It was a great present, I will leave it at that.
