Last year I spent $5,000 on my wife's Christmas (countertops), so this year it is a couple of books for her.

She watches at least as much TV as I do, but she was happy watching the old 20 inch model, so I consider the TV a gift for me. A lot of the gifts we get each other (cameras, DVDs, Books) are used by both of us, but that doesn't mean they aren't gifts. Now, to your point, the countertops are more of an investment than the TV, and they do increase the value of our house, so it's not quite the same as getting her a $5,000 piece of jewelry, but she still thought it was a pretty nice gift. |

My mom is very practical. She always gets me a bottle or two of contact solution. Also clothes, since I hate shopping. |

As soon as my wife hit highschool her mom would get her food storage items, pots, pans and dishes. Dropping serious hints for her to move out as soon as possible.
I bought my wife some Nike running shoes, Some lame eye lash curler she wanted ($28 from Nordstroms good hell that is expensive), some lotion, some clothes (specific ones she asked for no way would I pick them out myself). Some other crap that i cant remember right now. For me I see a big box under the tree that looks a lot like Rockband, so my fingers are crossed.

Since I have our kids covered, both our families and his hometeaching families, he really hasn't had to buy a single present. What a lucky guy.
