Default Bronco's defense

While I am not an advocate of the injury excuse to justify poor defense, as I feel injuries are part of the game and teams should have adequate depth and in the end if BYU is consistently experiencing more than other progams I believe there is more to it than bad luck. However, I do accept that part of the reason the defense has sucked hind titty the past couple of years was the mass attrition and HC casualties.

I think this is the year that things start to turn around, that is if Bronco is a decent coach. Perhaps I am a homer, but I really believe that this defense has more athleticism and depth than it has had since 2003. I still think it will suck, but I am actually optimistic that it will not suck as bad as last year. In fact I expect it to be somewhat similar to the offense in 2004. Well that is optimistic as it will not finish the year as good as the offense in 2004 was looking in late OCT-early NOV, but my point is that last year was rock bottom for defense.

Looking forward to 2007, I really think that BYU will only have 2 players expected to contribute on the 2007 defense not in school for spring ball. That is huge, IMO. BYU fans will not spend the summer next year worrying about who is qualified. The cbs in 2007 will be Bradley, Saulsberry, Buchanon, Howard and Criddle. The Safeties will be Gooch, Tafuna, Fowler, Pringle, Attig and Gabriel (I think he will move back to either SS or FS). The DL will still be rebuilding somewhat and BYU fans will be looking forward to the arrivals of Magnum Mauga and hopefully Simi Fili to bolster up the NT position. However, if BYU signs Tukuafu he enrolls in January and if he does not sign it is not as if there is a dearth of DE talent at BYU right now.

I expect this defense to be improved this year. I actually think that the defense in 2007 will creep into the upper half of NCAA rankings and will be one of the top 3 in the MWC. Unless there is mass attrition again, I expect the defense in 2008 to rebuild due to replacing key players, but it should not fall off the face of the planet unless there is mass attrition to the freshman and sophmores in the program.

I really believe that if the defense does not have mass attrition, 2008 and 2009 have the chance to be really good years. On the other hand if the team struggles this year baadly, I think Bronco is on a slippery slope. I think the guy actually has a plan that will make BYU competitive, that is why I think getting those 8 wins this year is so important. It buys him the time to rebuild a little next year and continue to develop the players he has in the program that *appear* to be the types who can handle the uniqueness of BYU's standards. The attrition of the Crowton era compounded by Crowton's quick fixes that blew up in everyone's faces is not a road I want Bronco to be tempted to head down. If he can get 8 wins this year, he will not be facing the stress that Crowton was.

I think you are right on (though I still think 8 wins is almost a lock for this team).

That's very optomistic Goat -I'm impressed ... with this seasons offense any thing less than 8 wins will be a dissappointment!
