My bike
KHS, steel frame, carbon fork, with Kysrium wheels weighs 24lb with saddle bag.
So I know that is more than your average. But is this a crazy high number, or a reasonable number? And how much improvement will I have if I get an 18lb bike. |

You will notice the 6lbs. difference when climbing. Less so on the flat. Descents will depend on frame handling.

The biggest difference in feeling will come from the wheelset. ROtating mass tends to give one the biggest changes in a feeling of lightness and speed. So the more weight you save in your wheels the more difference you will feel in the bike. Otherwside, I suspect you will feel the bike is faster, but it probably won't be a life changing experience. OTOH, if you are riding a lot and climbing a fair amount, 6 pounds is quite a bit of difference.
How much will it cost you to save the weight?

Also, if you are going from steel ot CF, you will notice a big difference in the feel of the ridse, which may be quite significant to you. I suspect Archaea can give you more insight into this than I can.,

I don't know about cost. I was thinking about getting a bike instead of that expensive camera lens.
something in carbon or titanium, ultegra. |

I doubt if you'll feel much difference in performance on the Texas flatlands, other to lift it up next to your old bike to show off to your buddies.
24 pounds? That seems a bit beefy to me. Mine is not light by any means, but I think I'm running about 22 pounds. You might want to take the car jack out of your saddle bag before your next ride. It makes changing a flat a lot easier, but it may bog you down a bit on the sprints and rollers. |

Spinning or rotational weight is important.
I disagree, if you intend to ride with the racers, it's nice to have something comfortable. I'd get a ti or carbon fiber with great wheels, and a combo Ultegra/Dura Ace groupo. You will notice the weight on acclearations in a crit, up a hill and in handling. The heavy bikes won't handle as well. So I disagree you will notice a difference. Now for crits, you don't need to spend a lot, just get a good aluminium, sturdy frame with appropriate grupo to accommodate immediate power transfer.
