This is an interesting question and definitely worth debate.
For the CONFERENCE, I'm going to say that the BYU-OU win is the most important win to date. Reasons: Utah has already gone to two BCS bowls and won. The individual school has won respect nationwide, but only slightly won respect for the conference. It's too easy to discount a single school in a smaller conference. Since until recent years Utah didn't have a tradition of national respect in football, the U of U is seen as a "new" program that has quality to dispute among the top football teams. But it has really only done it for itself. It has only slightly helped the conference as a whole because one big fish in a little pond doesn't make the pond worthy to stand where the big fish swim. TCU has also contributed little because the program has YET to win a BCS bowl and is still fighting for nationwide respect. The program is coming along and brought a little more respect to the conference, but not enough to make much of a difference. The BYU factor is that the team had a tradition of football excellence and national respect for winning the national title once, even though by today's standards that title is viewed differently today than it was then. The program went into the tank after Crowton's first year, a year that even with a nearly undefeated season the team wasn't even being considered for a BCS bowl, a fact the team was informed of right before the famous blowout against Hawaii. Today, the team wins one HUUUUUUUUUGE game and now is a candidate for a potential although very distant 2nd national championship game. Putting a MWC team among legitimate potentials to the NC game puts the conference right on par with any other BCS conference. That hasn't really happened before, due to the opponents the MWC has played in the past. Was the Utah win against Bama huge? Yes, but due to the national respect given to the U individually, people expected Utah to hang with Bama and possibly win, they'd done it before. Now we're looking at something new, which in importance, to date, wins my vote for the time being.

I see these wins as part of a continuum. BYU win over Michigan and national championship -----> BcS system. Utah win over Pitt ---> Opportunity for non BcS school to play a quality BcS game. Utah win over Alabama ---> Non BcS schools should be considered for title game. BYU win over Oklahoma ---> real opportunity for NC game for a non BcS school.
What could be next: BYU win in NC game brings the NC back to Provo, thanks in part to Utah and BSU ----> New super BcS to ensure a non-BcS school will not play for a NC again. Repeat. |
