it's not necessarily SU's fault if his daughter got bad grades.

I doubt SU was there doing her homework and gave her wrong answers.

In just my own family we go from MD to "might eventually get an associate's". I don't know if there is anyone to blame, or even if blame is appropriate.

or at least cast aspersions at their choices.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

This is a potential hidden cost of the traditional (by that I mean the mid-twentieth century traditional) arrangement advocated by Sister Beck that never gets addressed. But our whole society's orientation is toward valuing mother-child bond more than father-child. It's an insidious form of reverse sexism you see everywhere.

I would definitely call saying something had gone horribly wrong when the kid goes to Washington State a form of "milestone paranoia."

for an elitist like you, your kid going to WSU is like an East Coast family sending their kid to Tennessee-Chatanooga.

It's a mystery.
