Marvin Perkins on CNN
He has an opportunity to do plenty of good, particularly if he takes the "cleared up the doctrine" approach that he mentions in this article, and stands on his line that "members need to address the topic as 'part of our history.'"
Brother Perkins' assertion that when the scriptures refer to the "blacks," they are not referring to skin color could be interesting too. His interview has already been taped (I'd prefer a "live" interview if this were me, but sometimes there's no choice), so let's hope he swung for the fence. If he did, he has little to fear from Church leaders not liking what he says on one point or another. The pervasiveness of CNN protects him from mullahs in this instance. Marvin Perkins could help the Church with a paradigm shift, and he could do it tomorrow night at 9 pm EDT on CNN. Spread the word. http://www.mormontimes.com/MITN_newsmakers.php?id=1569

Perkins on "Mormon Miscellaneous" was an interesting podcast (it is the most recent episode on itunes). I appreciate his explanation of the interpretation of dark/black skin, but it doesn't make much logical sense to me.
If the scriptures say someone was given a dark skin, seems to me that the word "skin" means what it says. Attempts to explain that away seem a bit strained. I don't believe those parts of the scriptures, but I don't think they are metaphors for some other characteristics or curses. |
