Default Is the MWC a basketball league?

From an Indiana website:

Quote:
New Mexico is a basketball school in a basketball league. Among the Mountain West Conference's eight other members are basketball stalwarts such as Nevada-Las Vegas, Utah, Brigham Young, and more recently, San Diego State and Air Force
How many of you consider the MWC to be a basketball league? I always considered the MWC to be a football league (meaning that football gets more attention and has more prestige in the league than basketball). The Colonial league or the Atlantic 10 - those are basketball leagues. The MWC certainly didn't add TCU to the conference in order to make the conference better at basketball.

Am I just delusional in thinking of the MWC as a football league?

I don't really consider it either.

I think there are certainly more schools, it could be argued, that have been more successful in bball than they have been in football (Utah, New Mexico, SDSU, UNLV, even Air Force, Wyoming).

So there's a good argument that the MWC is a bball conference.

In NCAA football rules. Very few schools that have both FB and BB are considered basketball schools. And few leagues with D1 of both would be basketball leagues--if any. New Mexico probably qualifies as a BB school, but they'd be the only one in the MWC.

Basketball schools with D1 in both FB and BB

Duke
Kentucky
Indiana
Kansas?
New Mexico
Temple?

that's about it

Univ. of Houston might be considered a bball school.

there are lot of schools that have both, but the bball team has traditionally doneo better and gotten more support. Like NC State and NC.

The MWC is more of a basketball league than it is a football league.

The MWC is more a basketball league because basketball is not exclusionary like football is.

Of course, I don't consider it much of a basketball league, because outside of Utah no other teams really do anything in the post season.

You're correct, UNLV has never done anything in post-season.

Just for interests sake, which team had the most recent NCAA basketball championship?

Did any team progress beyond the first round last year?

UNLV is most definitely a basketball school. You could argue SDSU is as well, but only by default. CSU is football first but only because of Sonny Lubick, and that's fading very fast. Wyoming is probably more basketball than football. Utah is basketball. I guess it depends on how you want to define "basketball school" and your definition is pretty narrow, but UNLV certainly fits it.

UNLV was in the Big West when they won the championship, but point taken.

I don't remember if there was any MWC team that got past the first round last year. I didn't pay much attention to the tournament.

Well let's look at it school by school:

BYU -- Football school
Utah -- Basketball school
San Diego State -- Basketball school I guess...
UNLV -- Defintely Basketball school
New Mexico -- Basketball school
Colorado State -- Football School
Air Force -- Football School
Wyoming -- I'd guess Basketball, but am not sure
TCU -- Football school
