Default 7 Demons of Mary??

While visiting my parents ward to see my father speak on Easter Sunday, I was able to hear a concept that was new to my ears and at least new to my father's as well.

The concluding speaker (not my father) focussed his remarks on Mary rather than the savior in terms of the Easter season. His goal (he said) was to share with the congregation his "Mary moment" in the hopes that we would all be able to have our own "Mary Moment."

He then proceeded to talk about the 7 Demons that overtook mary during the time of the crucifixion and ressurection of Jesus. The culmination of this and the ridding of the Demons was when Jesus found Mary at the seplecure and we know the famous lines of scripture that follow.

My question is regarding the 7 Demons that affected Mary...I had not heard of this...has anyone else?

I don't mean to dowgrade the guy who spoke, because he gave a very sincere talk, I just wanted clarification on the concept that he was trying to speak on.

The concept is alive and well in Catholic churches...

This isn't a concept in the LDS church

IMO, that's an inappropriate story to be sharing in Sacrament Meeting.

Especially on Easter.

I understand what he was trying to do in focussing on Mary...but sometimes it is just better to focus on the savior...you pretty much can't go wrong when you do that!

He was very sincere throughout his whole talk, but it just didn't make sense...especially with the Mary focus.

I had a girlfriend for a while who was Catholic and I remember she and her mom deciding that they wanted to become more like Mary and they decided to start praying to Mary in order to come closer to her.

...I didn't notice any difference

Do they embrace the idea that Mary was a prostitute or not?

Maybe the topic was assigned by the Bishopric. "Please talk about the 7 demons of Mary and how we can overcome our own demons in our lives. Please expect to speak for 15 minutes, less if the choir number goes longer than we expect."

Someone may have to correct me here...I believe that they think she was a Prostitute because that was mentioned by Pope Gregory I in a sermon a long time ago...ever since then, Mary as a prostitute has been common knowledge...thus the anger at the assertions of the DaVinci Code.

I also don't know if Mary in this particular instance with my ex was Magdeline or Mother of Christ...I think it was Mother of Christ as she is a saint in their church.

This is interesting. I was reading the passage yesterday and noticed the seven demon thing for the first time also. I didn't realize there was a reference to the demon possession being during the crucifixion. I was wondering when they occurred. I was kind of hoping that they were exorcised when Mary met Jesus the first time and it was a metaphor for her past sin and repentance.

Also, why is this inappropriate for a sacrament talk?

I just did some searching and found that the seven demon possession is mentioned the first time Mary Magdalene appears in the account, and it is assumed that they were exorcised with her first meeting of Jesus, and that my metaphor theory is definitely possible. I think maybe I had heard this before and registered in my subconcious, making me think it was my own theory.

This further makes me wonder why someone would think it would be inappropriate for sacrament talk, in fact I think it would be fabulous material for a sacrament talk.
