Don't expect Detmer to run spread option. It will probably be somewhere between what he ran when he played and what BYU did last year. He clearly wants the TE involved more as they made that an immediate recruiting priority since the new staff got there. I'm guessing they'll also throw more to the backs than they have been recently.

They've been throwing backs quite a lot. Haven't you seen Bernard & Algae?

30 catches between the two of them.

In contrast, LAKEI HEIMULI had 66 catches in 1985. (me thinking of random RB from past). Sikahema had 35 receptions the same year.

17 catches for Bernard and 13 for Brown last year. That's not close to how many the RBs used to catch under Lavell's offenses.

Detmer in his interview on BYUSN today said they were going use multiple looks and formations. They will put the QB under center but also use the shotgun. They'll be working more under center in the spring because it's what the team is less familiar with.

Most NFL teams do both. Under center and shotgun. Tony Romo is an example.

That's anti-empirical. I don't like it.

When you've got a mobile QB, why not use the read option? Taysom was wildly successful.

The trend in the NFL is towards spread offenses now. Even Walshites are moving in that direction.

Why not take advantage of the width of the field?

I think you have to look at it based on how much the team wins, and not how many exciting plays the QB runs when he's healthy enough to be there. I wouldn't say Bronco's last few years were "wildly" successful. Also, why not let Hill play a style that would prepare him better for the next level and has a much better chance of keeping him from getting hurt again? To paraphrase something Ty said today, he won't run as much but they will still run sets that will open things up for the entire offense because the defense will know he's a threat to take off. Think more like Steve Young.

Unfortunately he's not as mobile as we would like. Most games were zero mobility, on crutches. Meaning injury due to running made him ineffective.

Run him til he gets injured and then put Mangum in.
