I'm watching KSL tv right now and there is a special about President Hinckley's life. It just mentioned that Brigham Young sent GBH's grandfather to settle in Millard County.

Perhaps his grandfather did know Joseph Smith, but he certainly knew Brigham Young.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

If I understand correctly, the First Presidency was immediately dissolved upon the death of the prophet, and its surviving members return to their chronological places in the Q12, which is, in order:

Monson
Packer
Perry
Nelson
Oaks
Ballard
Worthlin
Scott
Hales
Holland
Eyring
Uchdorf
Bednar
Cook

The brethren will prayerfully seek who the Lord wants to be set apart as the next President, which traditionally has been the senior apostle (though it could be someone else), and the most senior remaining apostle acts as the voice in setting him apart. Here, President Packer would set apart President Monson.

Then the new President selects his counselors in the First Presidency, who do not have to be members of the Q12, nor does he have to select only two counselors, nor does he need to keep a previous counselor (Eyring). In fact, J. Reuben Clark was First Counselor under Heber J. Grant but later "moved down" to Second Counselor under David O. McKay.

That is correct, my guess is that Eyring remains a counselor, and Packer becomes a counselor.

I am very interested in who the new member of the 12 will be. Almost more than whom the counselors will be.

So can he choose two counselors, both from outside the Q12. In that case, wouldn't that leave 13 people for 12 spots? I'm not trying to be cute, honest quesiton.

Yeah, but presently there are 14 people for 12 spots. And since the office of Apostle is a life-long calling, I don't think any "extra" members would be released from the quorum for the sake of numbers. It would be like the Big 10 conference.

Me too. Still hoping for a minority. For counselors, most people would guess Eyring and Packer.

I'm not sure why people are picking Packer. I guess they're too young to remember back when the successor was not normally in the First Presidency.

I don't think Packer stands any chance of being selected as a counselor. I think he'll remain the President of the 12, minus the "Acting" title now.

I think the biggest challenge facing the church is the same challenge they've been facing for a long time, but only worse today.

Political Correctness.
