Agreed. They were both excellent as well. I love listening to both as I do many other guitarists. I still think Eddie Van Halen was on a different level.

And then there's the killer remakes. Saying they don't have soul, though, just doesn't ring true for me. It sounds like what fans of 90s grunge said about 80s rock until they realized all those indy labels were owned by the big record companies. VH rocks.
See, that's what I like about you SEIQ. Most intellectuals are music snobs and look down their noses at bands like VH.

I'm hugely pissed that the DLR reunion didn't happen. I've seen VH with Hagar twice and DLR solo, but I have yet to see the original line-up. Honestly, I don't think it will ever happen.

EVH is underrated as a guitarist. I think Rolling Stone ranked him 50th or something - they should be shot. I think he doesn't get respect because he spawned alot of two-finger tapping hair-metal wannabe's with no soul. Eddie is not only technically proficient, but HE DOES HAVE SOUL. He's a great rhythm guitarist and has laid down some of the greatest riffs of rock - Panama, Runnin with the Devil, and Unchained are at the top of my list.

And you're right about covers. Diver Down was half covers and it rocked.

Eruption. 'nuff said.

VH is alot like AC/DC - it's about killer riffs, kick ass guitar solos, great beats, poundin' a few beers (O'Douls of course) and havin' a good time.

I know this is very Danoconda-ish of me, but I would love to see Prince live. I've watched many pieces of him going solo on a guitar and you're right,,,he's excellent.

His diminutive and bizarre demeanor aside the guy is a hell of a musician.

You mean Jimmy Page? Page was awesome, and I'm a huge Led Zep fan, but I think EVH is better. Eddie is great live, the concert footage I've seen of Page, not so much.

Led Zepplin is fantastic and timeless.

Pink Floyd has soul.

Halen is all bubble gum without depth, but pretty darn good bubble gum.
David Gilmour is a fantastic guitarist. Severely overlooked. The two guitar solos on Comfortably Numb alone put him in my top ten.

Don't want to be a pedant here but Robert Plant didn't play guitar for Zeppelin - Jimmy Page did. Robert Plant was just the lead singer. I assume you already knew this and just had a mixup.

...

Dang! Venkman already beat my post by four hours. That's what I get for posting without reading through the entire thread.

my daughter has become a huge van halen fan. if they ever do go on tour, we have a daddy-daughter date planned for the closest city.

sure beats getting dragged to a rap concert or brittney spears show, vh can really get 'er done.
