It has occurred to me that maybe, for SWK, at the time, his statement was progressive. Meaning that he did not outright forbid inter-racial marriage. Imagine how scandalous it would be for a white man to marry a black woman or vice versa when SWK was growing up. Now certainly he was familiar with white LDS men marrying Indian women, but beyond that probably nothing. For someone who grew up believing that blacks were spiritually inferior, and who probably knew no blacks growing up in Arizona, it would be actually progress for him to say "well it's probably not the best idea, give it consideration."

Considering at the time, mixed marriages caused tremendous stress on those families and especially their children, you would have encourage it?
