Like I said, a lot of it depends on how much of the work that you are doing. It also depends on how much you are getting rid of. If you are keeping the tub and/or shower fixtures, then you will add a lot of the cost.

Tiling--it depends on how much you are re-tiling. If you are doing the floor and up along the walls (including in the shower area), you will be looking at $400-700. That does not include the possibility of new backerboard/cement board which will run you another $200. You also have the cost of mud and grout which will cost you another $50. If you do the work, fine, but if you hire it out, you have another $500-800 to get it done.

If you do a vanity instead of a pedalstal sink, you will run anywhere from $300-600.

You are correct, you can do it cheaper by going down a certain path (sinks, toilets, amount of tile/travertine, etc.) and save costs. If you do the work, you will save a lot of money though it will take a ton of time if you don't have experience on it.

FWIW, a $2000-5000 bathroom remodel would be considered very low nationally.
