Default How fast is the pace on the TdeF

Ok...trying to follow this online, and one thing I can never find is what kind of pace does the break away groups typically ride and what pace does the peloton keep?

I know it depends on the terrain etc,...but, in typical flats...what kind of pace do these animals keep?

Thanks.

I have seen figures on some of the flat stages, that the breakaway had averaged 27mph. These were small breakaways.

The avg. speed surely goes up by the end of the flat stage. During the run-in.

Fastest longer ITT average is over 30mph.

Lots of variables including wind.

They average about 25 mph on the flats. Break aways happen when conditions are right to attack. But they rarely succeed. The routes are so long that the break aways almost always get reeled in by the finish line.
