This year's team is a bubble team, and it needs to defeat
Baylor.

For BYU to have legitimacy this year, it needs a few signature wins. It blew the chance against Wisconsin, in large part because it has no identity. Hopefully, Carlino will add to its identity.

BYU needs two forms of identity a record identity which requires some signature wins. First, it needs out of conference signature wins. Wisconsin was its first chance and it melted in the second half terribly. Offense, defense and identity caused that loss.

Our next chance is Baylor but that will be when Carlino comes into play. It is probably too much to ask, but if BYU wants to matter this year, it MUST win that game and the Virginia Tech game. And it must win at least one game against Gonzaga.

Second, it needs a team identity. Right now this is a team of parts but no heart and soul.

Compare BYU to UNLV. Rice has already transformed that team into a real team. And if you look at some of the new recruits, that team could take off, whereas BYU has vanilla recruits unless it can sign Jabari. I doubt highly BYU signs Jabari and in fact, I'm betting against it, but such a signing could herald a new day for BYU basketball. Otherwise, we will consistently be a bubble team with an occasional blip upwards.

This is an important year for BYU basketball to rise above bubble team status to continue an upward trajectory. I'm worried BYU doesn't have the horses to make the leap even though we seem to have the Coach capable of doing that.

Also, when they hit 75% of their 3s there's nothing we can do. We had a legitimate shot until they started doing that.

I was proud to see that we had fewer white players on the court than they did.
