I taught the RS lesson yesterday on
Joseph Smith. I have to admit that the whole time I was preparing it I wondered what the class would say if I launched into something about his polygamous wives. Just out of curiosity did anyone else have that lesson yesterday, and if so how did it go?

Nobody mentioned polygamy. We talked about the Joseph Smith Papers project being funded by Larry Miller.

All of J.S. papers are being complied into one 30 volume set. It will include many things never revealed about J.S. to the people at large.

Bushman and another guy are the ones compiling it. Larry says it is the "most complete" compilation ever assembled. And is supposed to be a "scholarly compendium."

I guess that is code for "not complete". The question is what is known to be excluded, and what is unknown and also excluded.

I'm sure SoonerCoug will rifle through his filing cabinet to find all the embarrassing stuff the "complete" compilation is missing.

I don't know if it is code for anything. Larry gave the impression that they had gone to great efforts to get everything that was verifiably attributed to J.S. and put it in.

The guy who taught our class did a good job. He brought up polygamy, among other things. As part of his lesson, he talked about a recent experience where someone asked questions about JS, and asked how we would respond. One of the questions this guy asked him was "Is it true that JS had problems with his wife because he secretly took other wives". Led to an interesting discussion. It was interesting seeing the range of knowledge and viewpoints. They ranged from "I have never heard of this" to "I know all about it, and I have no problem with it".
We also talked DNA experiments and the announced change in the BoM intro. For a minute, I thought I was in the CougarGuard High Priest group. |
