The Kim family San Francisco was returning from Oregon, when they took a wrong turn and ended up in the snow. The wife and daughters were found recently, but the father, did a natural thing, which is usually a mistake: he left to look for help.

Yes, I'm following it. It really strikes a chord with me.

He is close to my age, I have two young kids, and I have been near that area during the winter.

I pray for his safety.

I grew up near that area. I'm not sure at what elevation they were stranded, but typically the snow would have nearly melted away after 4 days in that area. But he had no way of knowing that.

I heard some bad news last night re: the father. Searchers found his pants. That screams hypothermia to me. I wouldn't think he'd be very far from those pants. I think they find him today.

I had heard a bit about it, but saw more on Nightline last night. Right at the end of their report they slipped in that bear tracks were found near the pants (he was wearing 2-3 pairs layered, by the way). His path then left the road and went down into a canyon. It was too dark for rescuers to follow the trail at that point. I suspect we'll hear more today, but it doesn't sound good to me. Tragic story. Can't blame the guy for setting off for help by that time esp if the snow had mostly melted by then, though they always say to stay put.

Not to make light of a tragedy, but that part about the bear tracks just kills. I can see some news producer just wondering how he can spice up the story:

"Hey, the pants were found in the wilderness. There must be animal tracks within a couple of miles. Let's see..Raccoon tracks? No. Deer tracks? No. Mountain lion tracks? Maybe. Bear tracks? Yeah, that's golden."

The irony in this tragedy is that Kim was the gadget reviewer on CNET.com. You'd think that he would have had something on his person that could have helped in such a dire situation...radio, gps, etc. Sad story.
