Bummer about missing the anniversary and the first words.

We have a district snow camp here that fell on Valentines day a couple of years ago. That was not a happy time in the bluegoose household.

And Hippie and Lingo, just for clarification, its not camping, its scout camping. There is a difference. Camping is out with the guys in the wilderness areas. Scout camping has enough inconviences, such as singing or cheering for your food, that a leader should have as many luxuries available as possible.

I'm all for having the option of cots, cabins, cafeteria food and internet access if given the choice. I love backpacking and all, but sleeping on the cold, hard ground is over-rated.

The camp I was talking about was a Scout camp. We were there with several other troops at a designated Scouting camp.

Hell, our scout camp was camping in the woods, with our own troop and hiking all day long. I never went to an 'organized' scout camp. Then again, they always had them when I was doing football summer camps or conditioning... and at that point it wasn't a hard choice to make.

Sorry to hear you missed your anniversary and your kid's first words. To quote John Candy from "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" :

"Those moments never come back."

;P

I never went to an organized scout camp. My dad was the scoutmaster and he believed in roughing it. Roughing it to the point where he taught (ok, forced) us to build lean-to's and the such.

I can beat you all. We had outhouses, swam in a lake with alligators THAT I COULD SEE IN BROAD DAYLIGHT IN THE WATER 50 FEET AWAY. And this is just how the camp did it. Alligators were considered to be a nuisance, but not particularly dangerous (when an adult lifeguard/wrangler was present).

I never knew there was a "crap in a can" merit badge. Was the bagdge on your sash, Lingo, scratch 'n' sniff?
