The Rest is Noise by Alex Ross

For anyone interested in learning more about modern classical music (I realize that's a very small niche here), I recommend you listen to this interview of Alex Ross (the New Yorker music critic) and then get his book, "The Rest is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century". I was disappointed to miss his Dallas lecture tonight.

Radio Interview (fourth one down, "Listening to the Twentieth Century"). Ross talks about historical and political context of some of the major musical works. There are so many people who say they can't stand Twentieth Century music, but I don't think they understand there is such a great variety-- and so much of it is bold, interesting, and quite lovely.

Book Archaea, this is the book I had mentioned to you before that you expressed some interest in.

Ross has musical examples that he cites in the book on his blog so you can hear what he is talking about. Kind of like your own music appreciation class.
